While trying to salvage some data from an old IDE drive using USB connector, I was surprised the device would not mount on my Ubuntu system due to unknown filesystem type.

1. Install the package lvm2

sudo apt-get install lvm2

2. Load the device-mapper kernel module

sudo modprobe dm-mod

3. Scan for the LVM volume

sudo vgscan

4. Activate the volume found

sudo vgchange -ay vg_centos

5. Find the logical volume using lvs

sudo lvs

6. Mount the logical volume

mount /dev/vg_centos/lv_home /tmp/mnt -o ro,user
